Skylar is part of a sibling group of four children that were previously adopted. He has a twin sister, a biological sister, and an adoptive sister. In July 2011, the children’s adoptive mother passed away from cancer and Keyera, Kaily, Skylar and Chloe entered foster care. The agency was then granted permament custody as there were no relatives in the adoptive family that could care for the children. All four children have special needs.
Skylar is eleven years old and the twin brother to Keyera. He likes listening to music, especially country and rock and roll and it must be played at all times. He can use toy electronics (keyboards) to enteratin himself.
Skylar exhibited many delays when he fist entered foster care in July 2011. Skylar has shown great improvement since being placed in current foster home. He is starting to walk around home and likes being outside. He is able to go to grocery and other meetings with foster mom. He has progressed to a regular bed as well.
Skylar is non-verbal and still in diapers. He is supplemented with PediaSure, but has started eating baby food, french fries, macaroni and cheese and other foods that are mashed up. After an assessment in November 2011, he was found to be about 6 mths old developmentally in speech and language recognition. He has been diagnosed with Dandy Walker Syndrome; Autism Spectrum Disorder and blindness. He was born premature at 23 weeks- 1 lb 4 oz and had blood transfusions at birth.
Skylar has a history of becoming violent when out of his environment; however, this has improved and can handle going in trips now. He has reportedly knocked out teeth; screams and is aggressive; uncontrolled rages due to Dandy Walker Syndrome and Autism Spectrum; bites self when gets angry. Current placement has put a glove on his right hand to prevent further damage from biting. Since Skylar has been in his new placement, he has shown great improvements in behavior and ability.
He enjoys being outside and feeling the grass and sun on his skin. He will allow touches (hugs and kisses) by his foster parents and responds when he hears his siblings voices. He is now sleeping in a regular bed with a half rail and acts proud of this. Foster parents have gotten him a walker that will allow transportation to school and walking. Skylar began school in November 2011 and attends four days a week for half a day.
The siblings all have a close bond and relied on each other growing up for care. Currently Keyera and Kaily are placed together in a foster home that is interested in adopting them. Chloe is placed separately in a foster home that is very interested in adoption of her. Skylar is placed in another home that is able to care for his extensive special needs. The family is not looking to adopt Skylar at this time. The agency is interested in finding an adoptive home to place all four siblings if possible.
